Huge groups of giggly girls keep coming into Kafein (singular obligatory boyfriend in tow) and leaving after a few bellows of “Seriously? SERiously??” when they realize there isn’t any room for the whole bunch to sit together…meanwhile, I’m over here on a big comfy couch I’ve got all to myself, using my parka as a blanket and sipping some delicious coffee while one of my favorite songs just happens to play overhead. The people I know who are here and could distract me with their interesting conversations are too far away for me to eavesdrop, and I’ve gotten through 100 pages of this book in the last three hours despite having split my reading into three locations with ten-minute walks between each.
I’m tired of the way my mind overheats when I get stuck in an internet loop (checking email, Facebook, Tumblr, Nerve, Slate and the rest repeatedly) and so I’ve been compartmentalizing. I focus for an hour or so, preferably on printed reading (although tonight’s is a PDF), check everything once or twice, get a snack, and go back to reading. I’m not getting my hopes up that it’ll last through the week, but so far it’s working surprisingly well.
